January 16th, 2010

When mentioning Ed Hardy, what will you think about? Is it the ingenious combination of Jeans and tattoo? Is it its reputation in the fashion field? Or even the famous tiger diamond net hat which Lee Hom wore in his album “Hero of Earth”?And in the following, I will give you some brief introduction of the brand Ed Hardy.

Men's Hoody
Ed Hardy is a famous American brand which is born with the joint talent of the famous brand designer Christian Audigier and Don Ed Hardy. The former, who enjoys the fame of “King of Jeans” and used to serve as the designer of some major brands as Levi’s and so on, bought the patent right of the TATTOO Godfather Don Ed Hardy and thus introduced the tattoos art to the fashion field by instilling the retro punk elements and street culture to combine tattoo art with fashion together. When the tattoo Godfather met the Jeans genius, the cooperation of two masters has redefined the “Street Fashion”. Therefore, a new brand, being replete with American spirit, was given birth in 2005.
Audigier took the American young men and second-hand clothes as his designing inspiration. The products are based on T-shirt, zipper jackets, Jeans and other casual clothing while shoes and silver jewelry as accessories. Then he melted the excellent tattoo patterns of Don Ed Hardy thus the collection is naturally named Ed Hardy. Some embroidery, washing, splash-ink and other techniques are often used in Ed Hardy clothing to create a feeling of decadence erosion. A series of clothes are produced by combing the tattoo patterns created by the master as Eagle, tiger, skeletons, demons, daggers and nude, etc. Besides, some patterns with strong oriental taste like the carp, a dragon and the tiger totem, the tiger dogs and squirrels, are belonging to a relatively new breed of cartoon creation.
Ed Hardy clothing is not only loved by the generate young men, but also cherished by a lot of Hollywood pop stars as Brittany Spears, Paris Hilton, David Beckham, Ewan McGregor, Usher, etc. Besides the Hollywood stars, even the Asian pop stars who always lead the fashion wave are also vulnerable to the strong temptation of Ed Hardy. Rain, who is crazy for the retro punk, is privately the fans of Ed Hardy. BoA, Lee Minwoo, Jolin used to appear in the public wearing Ed Hardy.
It can be said that the remarkably compositions and color-rich design make the T-shirt with simple lines become enjoyable. Besides, the enriched kinds of products of Ed Hardy with the launching of energy drink make people look forward to the bright future of the changeable Ed Hardy.

Ed Hardy Goes ‘Beyond Skin’ In New Book

October 9th, 2009

beyond skinWhy can’t Don Ed Hardy just live? It’s not his fault that his tattoo and rock-inspired deisigns have been appropriated by Christian Audigier for clothing and

become the de facto douchebag uniform. No no no, Ed Hardy’s an artist, and he’s got a new book hitting stores on October 15th to prove it.

Written by tattoo historian Alan Govenar, “Ed Hardy: Beyond Skin” attempts to shed light on other aspects of Hardy’s career, like his work as a print maker,

painter and illustrator. The book aims to lend credibility to the idea of Hardy as a serious artist as exhibited through his work in these other mediums. Still,

some images are so burned into your brain that it’s impossible not to chuckle at the sheer audacity of it all.

Pre-order the book at Amazon for roughy $62, or shill for the $3k collector’s edition, which comes in a museum-quality clamshell box and includes limited edition

lithographic prints. 3k for a book? Douchebaggery at its finest.

How Much is Enough for Ed Hardy ?

October 7th, 2009

Type “Ed Hardy” into Google. Yeah , go ahead, I’ll wait. What do you see? Besides the apparel, you’ll find Ed hardy vodka, sparkling wine, celebrity endorsements, energy drinks, DINNERWARE?! Am I alone in this sentiment, reader, or do we have on our hands here a classic case of market oversaturation?

{Ed hardy air fresheners, camping gear, tea, tanning products, pet accessories, icing…}

I digress.

Ed Hardy the man had a much more respectable history. An American tattoo artist from Iowa, he was born in 1945 as Don Ed Hardy and raised in Southern California. Ed was a pupil of tattoo pioneer Sailor Jerry and is recognized for his Japanese tattoo aesthetic and technique. Turns out instead of a chance to attend Yale, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins rather entrusted his name and artwork to a very special duo: Mike Malone, and you guessed it, Don Ed Hardy.

What Ed Hardy has become now is somewhat of an illusion to pinpoint. In the midst of all the meaningless commercial items his licensee produces, are A to Z list celebrities dutifully sporting the line. They include:

Singer Christina Milan (notice the tacky “buy now” on both pics. See what I’m sayin’?

In my own circle, I’ve only seen Ed Hardy worn twice, and it was from the daughter of a wealthy family, and some d-bag at my school who, aviator shades and all, turned his nose up at the world while walking past people. Not a good look. This of course doesn’t mean everyone who wears it is like that…just saying.

I’m a little more happy about the Ed Hardy jackets, since I’m such a jacket fanatic, although I think the line is too busy for me generally. Nevertheless, check this one out:

Me personally, I’d rather get an actual tattoo by Ed Hardy:

OK maybe I wouldn’t go that far but it’s absolutely stunning detail where it counts.

You won’t catch me dead in most of the clothes, but I’m only one opinion. Maybe (and hopefully) Christian Audigier steps his game up and puts out some stuff that a wider audience can embrace. LRG comes to mind, Enyce, (whatever happened to Avirex? I loved their jackets..)

But moving on, what do you, reader, think about Ed Hardy? Do you own any of his clothes? Do you find the clothes wearable? Affordable? Do you think that this brand is for a certain type of consumer”?

Let’s hear it!
